M1470: SAFETY RECALL 0171:

2008 - 2011 ABS MODELS - NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON - PLATINUM LABEL DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID

Harley-Davidson's testing indicates that if brake fluid is not flushed for a prolonged period of time beyond the 2-year maintenance schedule  specified in the owner’s manual and service manual, a braking issue may develop on certain Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)-equipped model year 2008 – 2011 Touring, CVO Touring, Touring Police and VRSC (V-Rod) motorcycles built in the US from 05/26/2006 through 07/11/2011 and in Brazil from 02/18/2007 through 12/13/2011. Specifically, over an extended period of time, the DOT 4 brake fluid, which is hygroscopic (i.e., it will absorb water from the atmosphere), may begin to gel, which can lead to the formation of deposits on the brake components. If these deposits happen to form on the apply valve in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), the valve may stick. If this condition remains undetected, it may lead to a loss of brake function on the affected wheel without notice, increasing the risk of a crash.

2016 - 2019 STREET - BRAKE CALIPERS

Harley-Davidson has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain model Street motorcycles brake calipers. These brake calipers may experience corrosion in the caliper bore area if subjected to a corrosive external environment over time, especially in coastal environments or coastal environments where road salt is used. This corrosion could result in the pistons dragging in the caliper bore. If this condition remains undetected it could lead to increased brake drag, possibly resulting in a crash.

2021 PAN AMERICA SEAT BASE

Harley-Davidson has learned that the seat base on certain 2021 Pan America motorcycles built between August 08, 2020 and November 16, 2021 may lose threaded insert retention at one or more of the fastening locations.

Field data suggests this condition is most likely to develop as a result of the operator applying an upward load on the hand-hold portion of the seat base while deploying the center stand. If the hand-hold portion of the seat base fractures while a passenger is using the hand-hold feature, while the vehicle is in motion, may increase the risk of an injury.

2021 PAN AMERICA AND SPORTSTER S INSTRUMENT MODULE SOFTWARE UPDATE

This bulletin informs dealers that Harley-Davidson has identified a Instrument Module (IM) software error on 2021 Pan America and Sportster S models.

When the internal IM temperature is below freezing 0 °C (32 °F), the IM display may generate an error message. Shortly thereafter, it goes blank until the next ignition cycle when the IM temperature is above freezing.

If the warning is ignored and the vehicle is operated, the speedometer and neutral indicator would not be visible as required by FMVSS No. 123.

RH975 HANDLEBAR

Harley-Davidson has learned that the handlebar (P/N 55801154) on certain Model Year 2022RH975 Nightster motorcycles, built between August 24 2021 and August 18 2022, may have a weld quality issue from the tier 1 supplier that could lead to separation between the inner and outer sections of the handlebar. A separation of the handlebar could lead to a loss of control and an increased risk of a crash if this occurs while the motorcycle is in motion.
